Christmas Projects: An Alternative Christmas Program

After many years of doing traditional Christmas programs, we decided to do something very different.

The first year, we assigned different children a person from the Christmas story, such as Joseph, Mary, Angels, John the Baptist, Elizabeth, etc.

After many years of doing traditional Christmas programs, we decided to do something very different.

The first year, we assigned different children a person from the Christmas story, such as Joseph, Mary, Angels, John the Baptist, Elizabeth, etc. The children had to research their person and do a project about them. Some children did posters, some made dolls, some did shadow boxes. The night of the program, the children dressed as their person and said a few words about them. The children then sang Silent Night.

Afterwards, the children went to the social hall and stood beside their project, and as people walked by, they answered questions and told what they had learned. Cookies & punch were served.

The next year, we did something similar. The children each chose a country. They researched how that country celebrated Christmas and again, did a project about it. It is very interesting to learn the different customs from different countries.

On the night of the program, the children dressed as someone from that country, they talked for a few minutes about how Christmas is celebrated there. We also found recipes for foods traditionally served in those countries and the children fixed something for everyone to sample.

These were big hits with our church. The children enjoyed it and the people were amazed at how much the children had learned.
